The power of a mentor lies not only in guiding others toward success but in illuminating the path of self-discovery, instilling the belief that one's potential is boundless, and fostering a legacy of inspiration that transcends generations.

Mentors have the extraordinary power to unlock potential, illuminate paths, and inspire a legacy of greatness.

Since the early days of my childhood, I was fortunate to have a strong and proud mentor in my life – my father. His kindness and fairness left a lasting impact on me, instilling values that shaped my character. One of our cherished moments unfolded at the Skyline High School track in the hills of Oakland, where the bond between me, my dad, his whistle, my Adidas spikes, and the cinder track became the foundation of my journey.

Under the warm summer sun, we embraced the relentless grind of intense workouts, interval after interval. These sessions not only honed my athletic abilities but also molded my character. At the age of just 10, I emerged as a nationally ranked track phenom, fueled by a burning desire to distinguish myself for success. My father's words echoed in my ears – be a leader, not a follower, both on and off the track.

Early on, I understood that achieving winning results demanded discipline, hard work, and sacrifice. Each of these character pillars influenced every aspect of my life. Shortcuts were met with teachable resistance, shaping me as a student, athlete, professional, and eventually a father.

Reflecting on my 25 years in the basketball industry, I've had an incredible career, traversing the globe while getting paid to do what I love. Despite not scoring a meaningful basket in over 40 years, I still consider myself a baller. Coaching, advising, mentoring, managing – I've had the privilege to work with and develop some of the biggest names in the game, including LeBron James, Damian Lillard, Zion Williamson, LaMelo Ball, Derrick Rose, who share beliefs in the same principles that shaped me.

Only recently did I realize that my father is the primary reason I love coaching today. As a coach, I've imparted these principles to my children, creating a generational legacy. I wouldn't have it any other way.
